An Earth Day surprise on St. Joseph Peninsula: today we marked our first loggerhead false crawl of 2024! Our season does not officially begin until May 1st, and we don't typically begin to see nesting activity on our beach until mid-May. So we were beyond thrilled to get the call from a wonderful, educated beach-goer this morning that a momma loggerhead had made her way onto our shore. She did not lay eggs, but she made quite a long trek scouting out a good spot. We hope she will come back soon to finish the job!
NOW is the time to do our part by turning off lights; removing all beach gear; and filling in holes and leveling sand sculptures each night. We want all of our mommas and babies to come to have the safest passage possible.

St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol & Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center
Through our interactions with visitors to the Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center, beach-goers during nesting season, and inquirers from around the world, we are working hard to educate the public about the importance of sea turtles and the ways we all can help them.
Leave No Trace & Keep Lights Off
Help our visiting sea turtles at night:
- Clear the way at the end of the day by removing all beach equipment.
- Fill in holes and level sand sculptures.
- Turn lights off or use turtle-friendly red lights.
- Our sea turtles dig the beach CLEAN, FLAT, and DARK.
